Weinert PaulA growing body of research confirms the benefits of building a sense of community in school. Students in schools with a strong sense of community are more likely to be academically motivated (Solomon, Battistich, Watson, Schaps, & Lewis, 2000); to act ethically and altruistically (Schaps, Battistich, & Solomon, 1997); to develop social and emotional competencies (Solomon et al., 2000); and avoid problem behaviours (Resnick et al., 1997). These benefits are often lasting and researchers have found that the positive effects of certain community-building events persist well into adulthood. 

At Concordia, maintaining a strong and inclusive community is central to our mission, vision and values. This year we have reorientated our staff effort in Community Relations to focus on strengthening our community engagement activities, and this term we have enjoyed a range of highly successful events where students and their families have come together on many joyful occasions filled with warm welcomes and friendly faces.

Recent events such as Sports Day, Twilight Tea and the Parent Engagement Night, while all very different in purpose and structure, provide wonderful opportunities for the community to come together in large numbers, and as the term comes to a close, two more significant events are still to be held. This Friday, the College musical, ‘The Addams Family’ will have its opening night, and what a joyful community event this is. A true night of celebration as we applaud the talents of our dynamic student cast and crew. Following our musical performances, next Tuesday we will worship together as a whole College on the lawns of our special community meeting area the ‘quad’. A whole College Chapel Service is a unique experience of community worship where Receptions come together with Year 12s all in joyful worship to be led by the Bishop of the Lutheran Church of Australia, Rev John Henderson.

It has been a frenetic term, with so many diverse activities on the go. However, amongst all the busyness of these events the spirit of the Concordia community remains as strong as ever.

In celebrating this community spirit can I take this opportunity to thank parents for supporting these events with their attendance, with special thanks to volunteer helpers who have been instrumental in making this term such a success.

Senior Geography Students Take to the Field

Geography students in Years 10 – 12 have been busy writing field reports and analysing geographical data following recent field trips.

In Week 8, Year 10 students ventured to Port Noarlunga to observe the impacts of cliff erosion on the local environment and to determine whether coastal management practices reflected an understanding of coastal processes. Our trip was blessed with beautiful weather. A highlight of the trip was seeing dolphins swimming close to the shoreline.

Later in the same week, Year 11 Geography students spent the day at Belair National Park mapping and assessing the level of bushfire risk. Using a similar assessment tool to the one used by the Department of Environment for determining areas for prescribed burning, the students undertook their own assessment and analysis of the level of fire risk in Belair National Park. Despite stories to the contrary, our German Exchange students did not see any evidence of drop bears!

Finally, in Week 9 the Year 12 Geography students undertook some fieldwork activities in the catchment area of Brownhill Creek. The purpose of their field investigation was to begin preparation for their own individual field studies which form a major component of their final assessment. Despite long periods without any rain, we did manage to find a puddle of water that we could use to test water quality.

The students will now use the data collected from their field trips to draw conclusions and form recommendations for future management of the issues investigated.

Theory of Knowledge in the IB Diploma

Theory of Knowledge is a core subject of the IB Diploma Programme, and one of the key differences between the IBDP and SACE. It asks students to examine the concept of ‘knowledge’, and how knowledge is constructed in different contexts.

TOK uses a framework of ‘Ways of Knowing’ (including reason, memory, sense perception, imagination, language) and ‘Areas of Knowledge’ (e.g. Mathematics, Ethics, Religious Knowledge Systems, and Natural Sciences) to critique claims of information and ‘knowledge’ in their subjects and as presented to them in a world of advertising, spin and ‘fake news’.

For their external assessment, students are tasked with responding to one of six questions in 1600 words. Below are the questions being attempted by our current Year 12:

  1. “In the acquisition of knowledge, the responsibility for accuracy lies with the user not the producer.” Discuss this claim with reference to two areas of knowledge.
  2. “Each human being is unique, unprecedented, unrepeatable” (René Dubos). Assuming this statement to be correct, what challenges does it create for knowledge production in two areas of knowledge?
  3. Shared knowledge often changes over time. Does this fact undermine our confidence in current shared knowledge?
  4. To produce knowledge, just observe and then write down what you observe. Discuss the effectiveness of this strategy in two areas of knowledge.
  5. Is there a trade-off between skepticism and successful production of knowledge?
  6. “The pursuit of knowledge is not merely about finding truths; it is about finding significant truths” (adapted from PD Magnus). Discuss this statement.

Digital Resources

Students of the College have a Microsoft O365 account which enables them to use the licence for online Office on up to four more devices other than the College device. This means that families can take advantage of Microsoft’s offer and install the latest version of Office on home devices, using a student’s College identity. To install Office on a home device, follow these instructions:

  • Ask your son/daughter to open a browser on the target family machine
  • Search for O365 login and log onto O365 using school credentials
  • click on the profile in the top right corner
  • select 'view account'
  • click on 'manage installs' on the install status tab
  • click 'install desktop applications' and then follow the prompts

Obviously, the installs are attached to your child’s account so the products will be active so long as your child is enrolled at Concordia.

Year 12 Pastoral Care Update

The Year 12 information evening in Week 2 saw parents gather to hear Class of 2018 parents Adrian Francis (father of James) and Liz Sexton (mother of Cate) speak about the trials and tribulations of parenting a Year 12 student. Parents were later able to meet subject and Home Class teachers.

During our Year 12 Assembly in Week 2 we had some old collegians from 2018 - Cate Sexton, Jacob Kemp, Alex Powell, Nick Robins, Carys Brooking, Georgia Stanton, Tash Moy, Dylan Quinn-Valentine, Noah Hosking, Taylor Prenzler, Katherine Gregory and Sarah Sheedy - give their insight into how best to prepare for Year 12. We thank them for their presentation on ‘what it was like setting achievable short and long-term goals from the start of Year 12 and how they were able to achieve their goals and gain the ATAR that they required to gain entry into the university course they desired’.

Shrove Tuesday was celebrated on Thursday, 28 February with the Home Class Deputies cooking up a feast of pancakes for the year level to enjoy.

Peter Hughes, Acting Mayor of Unley, introduced Community Service in the Unley Area. Delivered in partnership with the Unley Council, the program supports our ethos of Engage, Achieve and Serve as well as offering students the opportunity to focus on the needs of others and to give them better perspective to cope with their own stresses and challenges. Students have already signed up to participate.

Psychologist Rita Princi spoke about how our Year 12 students can define their purpose for this year and their future.

The Year 12 cohort enjoyed an overnight stay at the Year 12 Retreat in Belair on Thursday 21 and Friday 22 March. Students and staff enjoyed the experience and it was humbling to see the entire group emotionally moved at different times.

This week Magistrate Ian White gave a presentation on increasing the students' drug and alcohol awareness, and about the law in relation to these issues.

The Year 12 Home Class Deputies will help prepare hot cross buns as we celebrate Maundy Thursday a few weeks before Easter which falls in the holidays.

In the last week of term, David and Katie Kobler will run separate YourChoicez seminars for male and female students on Wednesday, 10 April. David and Katie are passionate about educating, inspiring and empowering young people to have healthy, respectful relationships. They have an extensive background in youth work, youth communication and leadership. They are passionate about family, adventure and their faith in Jesus Christ. The seminar builds on the themes explored on the Retreat.

Parent Engage Evening

Seventy Concordia Campus parents participated in a series of short workshops at the College on Wednesday evening, 27 March. The evening began with twenty minutes of networking over nibbles and drinks before parents rotated through up to four twenty-minute workshops. Covering thirteen different topics that included Library Resources, Using ManageBac, Collecting Science Data, Mindfulness and the Digital Technology Project, our volunteer presenters provided parents with snapshots of initiatives, activities and resources we engage students in during their time at Concordia. Overall, it was a pleasant and successful evening!

Student Achievement

Congratulations to Reuben 10SKLE who recently won the second round of the National Karting Championship in Newcastle, after previously finishing 2nd in Round 1 which was held in Ipswich, QLD. A fantastic achievement! Reuben is now preparing to race in Round 3 at Monarto, SA on Friday, 17 and Sunday, 19 May. We wish Reuben all the best for the next round of competition!
