From the Acting Principal

Drogemuller Sue aiTerm 2

It has been a positive start to Term 2. The students have settled back into the routines quickly and are certainly refreshed after the holidays.

Staff Update: Michael Paech is continuing his Long Service Leave but will return to school on Monday 14 May. It will be great to have Michael back and we are looking forward to seeing him revitalised from his leave.

Miss Jessie Thiele has been appointed to Year 4 and will replace Mrs Caitlin Wilk from the beginning of Week 5 while Caitlin takes maternity leave. Mrs Nancy Wells has commenced her Long Service Leave and we welcome Mrs Meredith Phillips to the Art position this term. Miss Maddy Russell joined the Year 1 team toward the end of Term 1 and we are pleased that she will be continuing for the rest of the year as part of the Year 1 team sharing 1H with Mrs Rachel Harrip.

We are looking forward to tomorrow afternoon when we have our first Market Stall for this year. It will have a Mother’s Day theme. There will be a buzz of excitement in the Courtyard as the children eagerly spend time choosing a gift for Mum or perhaps buying some goodies for themselves!

Quality Schools Surveys 2018

This year our College will be participating in surveys managed by Research Australia Development and Innovation Institute (RADII). The surveys are being conducted for the College by RADII under a contract with Lutheran Education Australia.

The data that is collected will be used by the College and Lutheran Education Australia to develop strategies and implement initiatives to improve the quality of education offered by Lutheran Colleges.

Concordia students in Years 5 to 12 will receive an invitation to participate through their College email address and may complete their surveys during class time. In addition, parents and staff are invited to participate in the survey which will be open from Monday, 11 June until Monday, 2 July 2018. We hope the parent survey will help us to find out how well the College is managing the wellbeing of its students.

Parents will receive an email from Dr Jean Thompson at RADII with an invitation to respond to the survey online.

All survey responses go directly to RADII and are not identifiable by the College, unless you wish to indicate that you want your feedback to be identified. All data will be stored securely and the anonymity of all participants is assured.

If you do not want to participate in the survey or you do not want your child to participate, please notify the College by Wednesday, 16 May 2018.

We encourage you to respond to the survey as this provides valuable feedback to inform decisions regarding College improvement at Concordia College. When the feedback from the survey is received we will share the findings with you.

Thank you for supporting the survey process.

St John's Campus Family BBQ

As Term 1 drew to a close, the St John's Campus community came together for its annual Family BBQ event on Sunday 8 April. As well as an opportunity to catch up over a delicious BBQ lunch, the bouncy castle, face painting and sporting activities on the oval provided lots of fun throughout the afternoon. A big thank you to the volunteers who helped the afternoon run so smoothly and to 'Jack and the Metronome', a talented band of Concordia Campus students who provided some live music which certainly added to the atmosphere.

Wednesday P&F Lunch Orders for the St John’s Campus

Wednesday lunch orders are back for Terms 2 and 3 at St John’s Campus!

Please note that lunch orders can only be placed via the Qkr! app. The Qkr! app provides a fast, convenient and secure way for you to order your child’s lunch without having to worry about writing down orders and searching for the correct money!

How to use Qkr!

  1. Download Qkr! for iPhone or Android. iPad users will need to download the iPhone app.
  2. Register - Select your Country of Residence as 'Australia' and follow the steps to register.
  3. Find our school - Concordia College St John's Campus will appear in 'Nearby Locations' if you're within 10km of the school, or search for Concordia by name.
  4. Register your child - When first accessing Concordia College St John's Campus on Qkr! you will be prompted to add a student profile for your child/ren. This allows you to make orders and payments for them.

The Qkr! app accepts most major credit and debit cards, and there are no fees payable by parents for use of the app.

Please note: Lunch orders must be submitted before 9am on Wednesday morning and can be pre-ordered in advance! Lunch orders can be cancelled directly on the app as long as this is done prior to 9am on Wednesday.

Should you have any questions or issues with regard to downloading and operating Qkr!, please contact the Qkr! helpdesk on 1800 689 562 (and if they can’t solve the issue straight away we will accept a manual order via the School Office before 9am in the meantime).

For past users who cannot recall their password, it is recommended you use the website (rather than the app) to request a password reset.

We would love some volunteers to help us serve lunches. Please click here to view and add your name to the online roster:

Please also download our new menu.

Thank you for your support.

Assessment Professional Learning

On the two days prior to the start of Term 2 (Monday and Tuesday last week) all teachers at St John’s Campus were involved in professional learning about Authentic Assessment. This involved engaging with the connection between assessment and student learning, various tools for assessment, using data from assessment to inform teaching and learning, providing feedback that will move students forward in their learning and ensuring that we are assessing knowledge, skills and understanding.

This professional learning has challenged us on many levels as a staff group. It is an exciting time as we reflect on the way that we have assessed students previously and continue to make improvements so we can cater to each student’s individual needs and provide students with opportunities to have ownership over their learning. We are excited about engaging in this journey of reviewing assessment and look forward to continuing to work in partnership with students and parents as we move forwards in this area.

Charity Cup

charityCup aiThis term at school there will be a Charity Cup held in the House teams. We are asking that students donate five cent coins to the container found in each class. These will be collected across the term and the House that raises the most money will be the winner of the Charity Cup. The donations will support the recent Papua New Guinea earthquake. There will only be five cent coins allowed. You are welcome to donate any other money as usual to the offering containers in your child’s class. The Charity Cup will be held during this term only. Thank you for supporting this worthy cause and bringing in those five cent coins.

School Photos

Class, Individual and Family Photos for all students in ELC to Year 6 will be taken on Wednesday 30 May. Order envelopes have been sent home with students today. All students will be photographed as a class group and must return their envelope - even if not purchasing photos. This allows photographers to easily identify each child. Completed order envelopes are to be returned on or before Photo Day by placing the form in your child’s classroom communication box or returning directly to the School Office before the day. Students are to wear their full winter uniform on this day - no sports uniforms.

Family photo forms are available from the School Office and these photos will be scheduled for the end of the day.

Please note: For families with students attending both campuses, an opportunity for family photos will occur when Concordia Campus has its photo day on Thursday 9 August.

LLL Update: Top 5 Tips to Teach Kids About Money

Do your kids understand money? I mean, really understand it?

Probably not; most of them don’t. That’s because we pay for things with a swipe or a tap, and often don’t use actual cash. School banking rates may also be declining, because finding cash on the day can be inconvenient.

The risk we run by not teaching our kids about money, is that they’ll can fall into the credit card trap when they turn 18, and begin their adult lives in a world of debt.

Here are 5 suggestions for teaching your children BASIC financial skills:

  1. Get them into school banking. They learn so much from physically touching the money and participating in their own savings.
  2. Teach them they need bread for sandwiches, but want chocolate for a treat. There’s a difference.
  3. Make them earn their own money by doing chores! It’s old school, but it works.
  4. Don’t buy stuff for them all the time. They can buy it with their own money.
  5. Google “Three Jam Jars Kids Money” – a great way for kids to visualise budgeting.

For more information on basic financial literacy visit the ASIC moneysmart website.
