Generations in Jazz 2019
Concordia was represented by 65 Big Band and Jazz Choir students at this year’s Generations in Jazz event in Mount Gambier, a national competition involving talented music students from more than 150 schools annually, and we were delighted to again achieve some excellent results!
Highlights included winning first place in the Small Jazz Combo section, Big Band 1 winning second place in the Division 2 section, and Jazz Choir 1 finishing fourth by a narrow margin in Division 1 of the large choir section. Big Band 2’s Saxophone Section was also recognised as Most Outstanding Sax Section in Division 2, winning the Morrie LeDoueff award which Concordia has now won a total of three times at Generations! The students performed to a high standard across the weekend and displayed team and relationship building skills along with quality musicianship, all of which made the trip an enjoyable experience.
We also celebrated with three of our Year 11 students who earned individual accolades. Lewis (tenor saxophone) and Sam (guitar) were selected for the Division 2 Super band, thereby earning the chance to play for 8000 people as part of the farewell concert, and Ethan (alto saxophone) gained entry into the Division 3 Super band.
As is our custom, the students also performed a short concert for students of nearby Nangwarry and Kalangadoo Primary Schools and it was heart-warming to see the joy-filled faces of the children as we shared our music with them.
