From the Old Concordians' Association Committee

Welcome to the August 2025 edition of Old Concordians' Connect!

At Concordia, the connections we make are lifelong and all Old Concordians are invited to stay connected through reunions, alumni events, sports groups, volunteering, networking and mentoring opportunities.

The Old Concordians’ Committee have recently welcomed Georgie Archibald, Class of 2024 and past School Leader, as a Committee member. Georgie is a very welcome member and valued contributor. We recently caught up with her for a short Q&A, which you can read below along with all of the other news in this edition.

We hope you enjoy reading Old Concordians’ Connect.

Introducing a Committee Member

Georgie Archibald (Class of 2024)

Georgie joined the Old Concordians' Association Committee this year and we thought we’d get to know her a bit better, so we asked her the following questions…

Old Concordians Blazing a Trail

Dakota Ochsenham (Class of 2017)

Dakota has blazed an interesting and unexpected trail as a professional footballer since graduating from Concordia, and we asked him to share some of his story with us.

Spotlight on an Old Concordian

Jared Basnec (Class of 2013)

We recently had a chat with Jarrad Basnec about a business called 'The Weekly Fifty', the brainchild of some savvy lads from the Class of 2013.

What is The Weekly Fifty, and who is involved?

The Weekly Fifty is a fun online quiz that drops every week with, unsurprisingly, fifty questions. We cover everything from current events and geography to sport, music, and everything in between. It is the brainchild of former students Patrick Carey, Cale Matthews, Alex Haren, Tom Gehling and Jarrad Basnec. Now, it’s available online for free so anyone can have a go, and it’s also run live at venues around the country. It’s all about bringing people together for a laugh, a challenge and maybe a bit of friendly competition.

Where did the idea come from?

Honestly, it all started with a shared love of trivia on a Saturday morning while going out for breakfast. We all love a random fact and felt the current weekly quiz offerings didn’t appeal to people our age, so one day we thought—why not make our own? What began as a fun side project between mates has grown into something way bigger than we expected, and we’re loving every minute of it.

Do you run events outside of Adelaide?

We sure do! While Adelaide is home base, we’ve run events all over Australia and even a few overseas. One thing we’re pretty passionate about is choosing venues that don’t have pokies—it’s just a little value we stick to. We’ve done everything from regular weekly and monthly brewery and wine bar quizzes to one-off nights for sporting and corporate teams. We’ve even teamed up with a few influencers around the country to run special quiz nights—we love seeing people come together over a good quiz.

What would you say to current students interested in starting their own business?

I would say just give it a go. There’s no perfect time to start, and high school or uni is actually a great window to try something out. You’ve got a bit of freedom, fewer commitments and heaps of room to experiment. If it doesn’t work out, no big deal—you’ll walk away with some solid experience and probably a few good stories to tell. Learn from it, tweak your idea or try something completely different. The main thing is to start... you never know where it might lead.

What are your funniest/fondest memories of Concordia?

As a member of the basketball teams that were fortunate enough to compete and travel interstate each year, those trips were a real highlight. Reflecting back on being involved in that program with the people that were around back then, I was genuinely blessed.

In terms of a funny moment, the lead up to and the day of the Year 12 Final Assembly was a uniquely fun experience. I had a heap of fun planning and being involved in videos and it was a great memory of finishing a fun year with a group of amazing people.

Basketball Club

Our Old Concordian Basketball Club players are halfway through the winter season. Our three teams are having enjoyable seasons with our new SA Church Basketball Association (SACBA) Women’s B team currently sitting in second place in Division 2 and our Men’s B and C Teams currently in first and sixth places respectively.

Thanks to team managers George Smith, Josh Gordon, and Kaitlyn Just for keeping these Old Concordians' teams going so well. We are looking to grow the Club in 2025/2026 and invite players of all abilities to join. We are especially keen to increase female participation. We also invite sponsors to get behind a Club that provides friendly, inclusive community connection.

Please email the Alumni Manager if you’d like to be involved in our preparation for the next season in Summer 2025/2026 (Oct-Mar) or to participate with us in the next New Year Classic (Australian Baptist Basketball Carnival) in Perth from 2–9 January.

Football—A New OCA Sports Club Partnership

Known as the "country club in the city" due to our great culture, the Adelaide Lutheran Football Club has been around for 56 years and we are known as the 'Bulldogs'. Currently there are three senior teams with over 100 players registered in the 2025 season.

In 2025 we added to our senior leadership with the appointment of a new senior club coach, Joh Duffield, who had a development coaching role at Norwood in 2024. This naturally attracted several experienced footballers to the Club. We have already seen our football program strengthen and we are excited to see what the coming years have in store!

Throughout all our teams we have many Old Concordians who pull on the boots every Saturday for a kick, for the love of the game and to have fun with their mates. Our club has a strong relationship with Concordia through our commitment in running the AusKick program for the Primary School students.

We are proud and excited to have the Old Concordians' Association on board in 2025 as major partners with the Adelaide Lutheran Football Club. With construction set to commence shortly on our new clubrooms, and the relationship with your Association, we are committed to creating a place for Old Concordians to call home.

If you are interested in finding out how you can pull on the boots in 2026 with your mates, please email the club president directly.

Sporting Flashback

The football season of 1937 was an exceptionally successful one for Concordia, finishing as undefeated premiers in the ‘Students Association’. All members played unselfishly, and the brilliance of goal sneak Merv Schultz, Class of 1933, certainly helped them along. Merv kicked 123 goals, including 22 in one match! His record stood for many years, until Everard Leske kicked 25 goals in a match!
