Based on and inspired by Puccini's opera 'La Boheme' and the 90s rock-pop musical 'RENT' by Jonathan Larsen, 'Metropolis Now' is a new play with songs about a group of friends in a dystopian future. Set in a crumbling inner-city metropolis in 2044, a group of struggling artists, painters, singers, dancers, writers and filmmakers live the bohemian lifestyle in an abandoned cinema complex turned decaying apartment building. When they are issued an eviction notice ahead of the building being ripped down and rebuilt into luxury apartments, they are thrust into a race against time and a fight for survival against corporate greed, rationed natural resources and the rise of AI in a vulnerable Arts industry. As relationships and values are tested, the characters find their true power and rebellion is in maintaining authenticity, creativity and hope in a world that increasingly perpetrates fear and artificiality in the exploitation of humanity. Woven together with nostalgic songs by Tracy Chapman, Crowded House and Everything But the Girl, 'Metropolis Now' gives a glimpse of a possible future that is not too dissimilar from our present or our past: the quest for love, connection and hope is timeless...

We hope to see you there!
