Last week, the St Peters Campus Reception and Year 1 students enjoyed a local walk to the Hewett Sports Ground. It was a great opportunity to get out into our community and explore the spaces close to our school.
As we walked, the children were full of energy and curiosity. They noticed lots of interesting things in the local reserve—trees, birds and even some colourful flowers. Games of “I Spy” made the walk even more engaging, with students spotting all sorts of natural and man-made features along the way.
Many children shared personal stories and connections to the places we passed, which helped build a sense of familiarity and belonging. It was lovely to hear them talk about streets they knew or places they had visited with their families.
At the sports ground, the children enjoyed playing on different playground equipment and making the most of the large oval. Using the soccer and football goals was a highlight for many. It was a fun change of scenery and a chance to be active in a new environment.
Throughout the walk, our students demonstrated principled behaviour and respect for neighbouring homes and shared spaces. Their thoughtful actions reflected our school values and made us incredibly proud.
This walk has also been a great way to prepare for our upcoming excursion to the Blackwood Library. It gave us a chance to practise walking safely as a group and being responsible in a community setting.
There were lots of requests to return to the playground again soon—always a good sign! Many children asked if we could visit again next week! Their excitement showed just how much they valued the experience, and it’s clear that spending time in our local spaces helps build both joyful memories and a stronger connection to our community.
