Exploring Water Bugs: A Splashing Success for St Peters Campus

19 June 2025

Our Year 2/3 and 3/4 students from St Peters Campus recently embarked on an exciting aquatic adventure — a hands-on Science excursion exploring the fascinating world of aquatic macroinvertebrates!

Armed with nets, trays and plenty of curiosity, students visited a local waterway to investigate the tiny creatures that call it home. With the help of Aquatic Macroinvertebrate ID Key Charts, they carefully identified water bugs like mayfly nymphs, water boatmen and even the occasional dragonfly larva!

This excursion was not only a fun outdoor experience but also a valuable learning opportunity. Students discovered how these small creatures can tell us a lot about the health of our waterways. They practised observation, teamwork and scientific thinking—all while getting their feet a little wet!

Back in the classroom, students were encouraged to take the ID charts home and continue their exploration in safe, local water spots. As one student put it, “It was like being a real scientist!”

We’re so proud of our young ecologists and their enthusiasm for the natural world.
