St Peters Campus Year 5/6 Chinese Excursion

Kung Fu Dojo and Chinatown, Adelaide
19 June 2025

Last week, the Year 5/6 students from St Peters Campus had the exciting opportunity to explore elements of Chinese culture during our excursion to a martial arts dojo and Chinatown in the city.

Our day began at the Kung Fu dojo, where students participated in a workshop led by experienced instructors. We learned a variety of basic Kung Fu stances, movements and self-discipline techniques. More than just physical activity, the session taught us about the core values of martial arts—respect, self-control, focus and tradition. These are deeply connected to Chinese cultural beliefs and were demonstrated in the way we bowed, listened and moved with care.

After the dojo, we walked through Chinatown, taking time to observe Chinese symbols, lanterns, signage and architecture. We discussed the significance of these features and how they reflect history, beliefs and the rich traditions of the Chinese community in Adelaide.

The day finished with a delicious lunch at a local Chinese restaurant. Students enjoyed tasting a variety of traditional dishes including crispy spring rolls, tasty dumplings, honey chicken and steamed rice. For many, it was a chance to try something new and appreciate the flavour and variety of Chinese cuisine.

The excursion was a wonderful hands-on learning experience that helped bring our studies of Asian cultures to life. Through martial arts, cultural landmarks and shared food, we gained a deeper understanding of the values, traditions and celebrations that shape Chinese culture.

A big ‘Thank You’ to Ms Nolan for all her planning and organisation for this excursion.
