Year 12 Drama – The Thing About Love

19 June 2025

The Year 12 Drama class presented an original new play, ‘The Thing About Love’, last week in two sold-out performances. This ambitious play was written by me based on student ideas and workshops exploring themes and ideas about love and relationships.

This ensemble piece followed 11 characters on their path to finding ‘true love’, moving back and forth through time as they attended each other’s weddings and celebrations. The Drama Centre was transformed into a wedding reception, inviting the audience to pull up a table and be guests at five weddings, and a birthday party where the birthday girl threw a surprise wedding for herself! The play explored the many and varied forms of love, break-ups and make-ups, destiny, fate, friends who become lovers and the astonishing commitment to loving and honouring oneself before being able to truly love another person.

The cast performed with excellent comic timing and energy, bringing the audience right into the action and even inviting them up for compulsory wedding dances like the Nutbush and Macarena, but also handled the emotional arcs of the characters with sincerity.

The production was publicly reviewed by Kym Clayton from the Theatre Association of South Australia who said ‘Congratulations to all involved in bringing this delightfully engaging play to the stage. The audience loved it.’

You can read the full review on the TASA website.

A special thank you to the Friends of Performing Arts who arranged catering for the event and to Jude (12TMCC), Sherry (11RAMO) and Mimi (8TFIS) who played live pre-show music before the performances.

We are looking forward to reviving this production for the Adelaide Fringe in 2026.
