Our Year 10 Child Studies students recently enjoyed a wonderful learning experience with the ELC students. As part of their studies, the Year 10s researched the importance of sensory play in early childhood development and then put their knowledge into practice by designing and creating a sensory toy.
Each toy was carefully planned to encourage social, cognitive and physical development in children. A key requirement of the task was for students to include at least one handmade element in their designs, allowing them to showcase creativity and practical skills.
The highlight of the task was visiting our St John's Campus ELC to share these toys with the younger children. It was a fantastic opportunity for our Year 10 students to connect with our ELC learners, observe how the children engaged with their creations, and see firsthand the value of sensory play in supporting development.
This collaborative activity was both educational and enjoyable, strengthening the bond between the ELC and secondary school students while deepening the Year 10 students' understanding of child development in a meaningful, hands-on way.
