Concordia College’s Year 10 and Year 11 SACE Stage 1 Geopolitics students were this week given the meaningful opportunity to deepen their understanding of Australia’s unique preferential voting system with an incursion by guest speaker, Flinders University Lecturer in Public Policy, Josh Sunman.
Mr Sunman ran two sessions similar to those he presents to his first year university students. This not only provided our students with his expert knowledge, it also gave them a taste of what it might be like to undertake political studies at university.
As part of his engaging presentation, our students, currently studying 'Understanding How Politics Work', were not only provided with an essential grasp of how state and federal politics worked, they also took part in a practical preferential voting activity.
Mr Sunman’s interactive presentation supported our students' current studies focusing on the historical evolution of political theories. Their upcoming task will undoubtedly demonstrate their richer understanding of Australian politics when they form political parties, developing policy platforms and then, after campaigning in a mock election, utilising the preferential voting system.
