In early February, one of the College’s Debating teams was privileged to be invited to be part of an episode of Insight on SBS. The team of Ilsa (10HLEW), Lilah (10HLEW), Amelia (10VNAR) and Nevada (10BWHA) were flown out to SBS’s Sydney studio, along with a range of other experts to discuss the topic ‘The Death of Debate’.
As part of this topic, guests were discussing whether Australia is still—or ever has been—capable of productive, safe and respectful debate, and the place that it has in democratic society. The girls themselves discussed the significance of debating in developing critical thinking, empathy and the ability to understand the nuance of complex topics. They highlighted the increasing trend of polarisation in modern society, and how important debating is in breaking that down and coming to reasoned, empathetic decisions. Overall, the team conducted themselves in a manner that they should certainly be proud of!
The episode itself will be airing on Tuesday 10 March on SBS at 8:00pm. Keep an eye out as well on the College’s social media for some behind-the-scenes photos.
