Year 6 German Students Visit Hahndorf

In Week 5, our Year 6 students participated in an excursion to the historic German village of Hahndorf. This experience provided an authentic opportunity to deepen their understanding of German migration and its lasting influence in South Australia.

A key highlight was our visit to the Hahndorf Academy, where students explored the history of the early German settlers. They discovered how families established homes, farms and community buildings through determination and hard work. They also practised writing their names in traditional Sütterlin script and experienced what school life was like 150 years ago using slate boards and chalk. On a scavenger hunt through Hahndorf, students visited St Michael's Lutheran Church and explored local businesses, including the Hahndorf Inn and the “Gewürzhaus” (spice house). A visit to “Eishaus” gave students the opportunity to try the well-known German Spaghettieis. We concluded the excursion by enjoying traditional “Brezeln”. The day was both educational and enjoyable, strengthening students’ connection to German heritage and bringing their learning to life in a meaningful way.
