Welcome to the beginning of the new school year. It has been wonderful to note the excitement of students and staff as we begin the year. A core focus of Concordia is to promote a love of learning amongst students so it is lovely to observe the genuine enthusiasm students have for their new classes. 

This year we have 12 new staff and 170 new students joining the College community, and of those new students some have come to us from country South Australia or interstate and several have come from overseas.  A warm welcome to all of these new staff and students. Concordia is a place of welcome and acceptance, but as a caring community our responsibility extends beyond the welcome into looking out for others to ensure they are settling in well. 

During our uplifting Commencement Service, the College community sang the College Hymn. The Hymn contains the words,

Make us gentle like our Saviour
Showing the love that we’ve been shown
Lead us all to help each other
As you lead us home

These lines are telling us that the act of Christian service means we must look beyond ourselves and reach out to care for others. The selfless act of helping others settle in is one of the most powerful ways of strengthening the Concordia community. I think we do this well but we never should take for granted our God-given responsibility to help others in times of need, particularly as many students have to navigate a new school environment.

In 2018 at a governance and leadership level much planning was undertaken as we forge new and exciting directions for the College. In 2019 many of these plans will be confirmed and others will begin to be implemented. Across the College some of the key focus areas for 2019 will be as follows: 

  • Finalise our College Strategic Plan through consultation with the College community
  • Finalise our Building and Facilities Masterplan through consultation with the College community
  • Finalise our Vision for Learning (this project will be guided by our new partnership with the University of Melbourne)
  • Develop a Vision for Wellbeing by processing data gathering through the Flinders University Wellbeing Research Project
  • Reframe our focus on challenging highly capable and gifted students
  • Act on the recommendations of the College IB Evaluation (which will take place in April)
  • Review the way we analyse and utilise data to inform improvements in student learning (with a particular focus on capturing student voice)
  • Develop a spiritual formation framework for students and staff
  • Finalise and begin implementation of our new Reconciliation Action Plan to strengthen our recognition, respect and celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and perspectives
  • Act on the recommendations of our 2018 International Student Program Review to enhance the experience for our international students
  • Begin operationalising the Old Concordians Strategic Plan with a focus on reconnecting with old scholars and facilitating their direct involvement in student learning.

These are indeed exciting plans and you will notice, for many of the plans, that consultation with students and parents will be critically important to the success of the outcomes. The way we will consult with parents will be communicated later in the year with the intention of utilising Parents and Friends forums to engage parents in facilitated feedback sessions.

So I wish you all every blessing this new school year, I am quite sure we have an exciting year of learning ahead.

2019 Commencement Service

Following an Orientation Day and the initial buzz of the return to school last Wednesday, the Concordia Campus marked the formal beginning of the new school year at the annual Commencement Service on Thursday, 31 January. The Service was a fantastic opportunity to begin the year together as a campus, to thank God for his blessings and ask him to be with us in the year ahead, to welcome and publicly acknowledge new staff members, to officially recognise new School and House Leaders as they embrace these important roles, and to celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2018.

As well as thanking his teachers, family and friends, Mark shared the following advice with current students, encouraging them to maintain their focus, to pursue things that interest them and to work hard to achieve their goals.

Stephen Hawking said, “Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet”. Stars are lights in the darkness. They are what we wish upon. They are beyond us; they transcend us. Find your star, your meaningful long term goal. Where do you want to be in the future? Who do you want to be? What sort of an impact do you want to have on the world? Then pay attention to what you do everyday, and modify your behaviour so that you are pursuing this goal, instead of wasting time on the expedient.

 

I’d also encourage you to make the most of the resources available to you. Take good handwritten notes. Ask teachers clarifying questions and do lots of practice exam papers.

 

Finally, don’t forget to enjoy the journey.

IB Diploma Award Ceremony

On Monday, 4 February the International Baccalaureate Diploma schools of South Australia recognised and celebrated the outstanding achievements of senior students in the 2018 IB Diploma cohort. Concordia College was proud to have three students achieve Awards of Distinction (a total score of over 40 of a possible 45 points) and a total of 17 Merit Awards (awarded to students receiving a 7 in an individual subject). A number of staff attended the event, held at the Adelaide Town Hall, and we were delighted to celebrate with the award recipients who were able to attend. We congratulate these students on all they have achieved and wish them all the very best as they head towards exciting new pathways.

SACE Merit Ceremony

Congratulations to the SACE Merit recipients who received their certificates for obtaining a perfect score in a Stage 2 subject in 2018 at yesterday's presentation ceremony held at Government House. A total of 11 SACE Merits were shared between nine students.

We are very proud of these students and commend them for their hard work and outstanding results. Well done!

World Vision Sponsorships

Concordia College has supported children through World Vision for the last decade. In 2018, our long-term sponsorships of Jester Marili and Joao Victor ended. This means that their communities, in Nicaragua and Brazil respectively, have matured to a level where they can manage their own development. It is important in international development for communities to not be dependent on continuing aid. So, this is fantastic news for us to receive!

In Wabule, Nicaragua, there have been substantial improvements in children’s academic results, access to essential health services and education, access to clean water, and crop production. More than 3,500 families gained access to safe, clean water through the project, while the Community Health Brigades is now staffed by 150 trained volunteer health promotors and midwives that help with hygiene, nutrition, immunisation and many more health areas.

Through the Pantanal Project in Brazil, a violent area in the city’s garbage dump has been transformed. Children have developed their reading and verbal fluency through computer classes. Teenagers have also taken part in the “Kids of God Project” that focuses on themes such as gender, prejudice, violence, drugs and human rights; recording songs and video clips to inspire youth to overcome obstacles in their daily life.

We will continue to support World Vision’s projects through new sponsorships of Charlotte in Burundi and the Mirpur community in Bangladesh. Charlotte is four years old and loves ball games. The project in her community will go towards strengthening child protection, educational support and training, assisting youth and adult incomes, increasing access to health education and care, and reducing environmental and disaster risk. In Mirpur, many people live in densely populated slums in Dhaka, where the risk of eviction is high and access to water and sanitation facilities is low. Many children drop out during primary school to support their families.

Project Update: Sheltered Walkway

In November 2017, we were advised that we were successful with grant application of $150,000 from the State Government to fund a Sheltered walkway along the path between the tennis courts and the oval. 

This application was supported by many members in the community who use the area and saw value in the planned improvement. 

During 2018 the College worked with landscape architects Oxigen to develop this concept. The design was finalised and construction was completed over the December/January holidays and we are delighted to now have more shelter available for those walking between campuses, and particularly for those watching sport. 

Final touches including lighting, paving and netting are being completed, but we are thrilled with the outcome and can see that this will be a great improvement for many members of the community as they access these areas of our College.

AFLW Adelaide Crows - Inner Sanctum Experience

In early December, the University of South Australia invited Maggie Evans (Class of 2018) and seven other high school students on an exclusive inner sanctum experience with the Adelaide Crows AFLW team. Maggie gained access to the team’s training session, getting up close and personal with the players and the coaches!

To start off, the students were split into small groups and were able to watch the team’s training drills from mere metres away, shadowing the team and coaches and getting to see their pre-season preparation. Maggie also got an insight into the importance of teamwork and the fitness requirements of elite athletes.

Maggie was then taken on a behind-the-scenes tour of Crows HQ. Amongst it all, she got to see the media room, rehab areas and meeting zones where the Crows team talk tactics. Maggie also learnt about all the roles and all the people it takes to get the team out on the field – seeing first hand where Maggie might end up should she pursue a career in sport.

Lastly, Maggie watched the final portion of the Crows AFLW training session and heard direct from Chelsea Randall, Crows AFLW premiership captain.

Immunisations for Year 8, 10 and 11 Students

The SA School Immunisation Program will be offered at Concordia by Eastern Health Authority (EHA).

All Year 8 Students will be offered:

  • 2 doses of human papillomavirus vaccine, Gardasil®9 at 2 separate visits.
  • 1 dose of the diptheria, tetanus, whopping cough vaccine, Boostrix®

All Year 10 students will be offered:

  • 2 doses of meningococcal B Vaccine, Bexsero® at 2 separate visits
  • 1 dose of the meningococcal ACWY vaccine, Nimenrix®

All Year 11 students will be offered:

  • 2 doses of meningococcal B vaccine, Bexsero® at 2 separate visits.

Immunisation consent packs have been sent home with all Year 8, 10 and 11 students. It is important that you read the information contained in the packs before you give consent for your child to be vaccinated at school.

All parents/legal guardians are required to complete, sign and return the Consent Cards, even if you do not consent for the student to be vaccinated at school.

If you did not receive an Immunisation Consent pack from your child please ask at SSO.

If you do not want your child to be vaccinated at school, please contact EHA on 8132 3600 to arrange for your child to receive the vaccines free at your local council. If you go to your local doctor of the vaccination, they will need to order the vaccine and may charge a consultation fee.

Remember to keep your child’s School Immunisation Program records in a safe place as they may be required for future employment or travel.
