On 11 April (the last Thursday of Term 1), all ensembles involved in Generations in Jazz this year (four Big Bands, three Jazz Choirs and two small Jazz Combos) presented a wonderful evening of their music in the Concordia Campus Quadrangle. Our first “Jazz Under the Stars” was a great opportunity for these groups to present some of their jazz program to a very large audience made up of family and friends prior to their performance at Generations. In addition, special guests, the Adelaide University Big Band performed an inspiring set of jazz music as an excellent example of what is musically possible at a tertiary level. As well as being highly entertaining, this was another fantastic community building opportunity, and one which was very much valued by all who attended.

Having worked extremely hard on their band and choir programs since December last year, on Thursday 3 May 86 Concordia students and 10 staff journeyed to Mt Gambier for the annual Generations in Jazz festival. Attended by more than 5000 other students and staff, this is an event which offers participants opportunities to perform, as well as be inspired by listening to peer group bands and choirs and internationally recognised musicians such as James Morrison, Ross Irwin, Jeff Clayton, Pattie Austin and crowd favourite The Cat Empire! All bands and choirs performed to a higher level than they have previously, and again represented our College in the public domain with distinction. Whilst the competition results are less important than the experience gained by the students, the following results were achieved this year:
- Big Band 1 – 3rd place, Division 2
- Big Band 2 – 7th place, Division 3
- Big Band 3 – 12th place, Division 4+
- Jazz Collective – 5th place, Division 5
- Jazz Choir 1 – 4th place, Division 2
- Jazz Choir 2 – 20th place (out of 51 choirs), Division 3
- Jazz Choir 3 – 11th place, Division 4
- JQ – 17th place, Small Combo division
- In-Sync – 5th place, Small Combo division
Essential to mention is that Ethan 10NMC was picked as a participant in the Division 2 “Superband”. Members of this band are determined by the adjudicators to be the best players in this division – a huge accolade. Additionally, Lily 11RGO was chosen as the most promising vocalist in Division 2, receiving the Ron Evans award – another exceptional effort.
Overall, Concordia should be extremely proud of all involved.
