Team Sailing

Concordia has participated in team sailing for the past six years. The sailors, drawn from Years 7 to 12, train at Brighton and Seacliff Yacht Club on Tuesday evenings during Terms 4 and 1. Concordia has entered two teams in state-based regattas that are held primarily during Term 1, culminating at the State Championships held during the last school holidays.

Both Concordia teams performed well with the Concordia A team taking out second place and receiving an automatic entry to the Nationals which were recently held in Hobart. The students represented the College extremely well and competed strongly despite the lack of wind which made for less than ideal racing conditions. Despite the sailing conditions, it was an enjoyable trip and a great experience for all involved!

Team sailing pits three boats from one team against three from another around a very short course. Races take approximately 8 to 10 minutes with the team with the lowest score winning the race. It's very tactical, with team members working together to manoeuvre their team into the best combinations. It’s a challenging sport that combines sailing skill, tactical awareness and a strong team spirit.

Team sailing is among the few sports where all age groups and sexes can compete alongside each other. Older students or those with more sailing experience are actively involved in mentoring newer sailors to develop their skills. Regattas regularly see 24 plus teams competing and in excess of 100 races completed in a day. The boats don’t stop, teams hop in an out as their schedule requires.

Training for next season is scheduled to commence on the first Tuesday of Term 4. It is hoped that Concordia will field three teams for the season and an information session will be held during Term 3.

Pedal Prix Victoria Park 6-Hour Race

On Sunday, 16 June, 48 students from Years 7 to 12 competed in the six-hour Pedal Prix race at Victoria Park. The weather was terrific, allowing all four teams to record some very fast lap times throughout the day. Teams had improved on their racing craft and changeover times leading up to the race by competing many hours of training at the track in very poor and wet conditions. This hard work resulted in minimal time off the track, leading to some excellent results.

Harmony, our Senior School bike, finished in 3rd position in the Senior School category by slowly chasing down Pembroke in an epic  final hour while team Concorde finished in 4th position after recovering from an early blow out. Team Matrix had an excellent start to the race, sitting in the top five of the Middle School category three hours into the race with excellent pace, but a broken chain led to losing multiple positions while our pit team repaired the bike. Team Shockwave had multiple new riders, who all worked well as a team to record some consistent lap times throughout the day.

Team Position Category Laps
Harmony 3rd / 36 S3 177
Concorde 4th /61 S2 163
Matrix 15th / 61 S2 145
Shockwave 33rd / 61 S2 127

Thank you to our wonderful sponsors for their continued support this year, and to all the parents and staff for their assistance on the day and during the lead up to the race. The team are now working towards the next race on 28 July in Adelaide.
