Give a five year old child some sticks, rope and other junk material, and sit back and watch the magic happen! That is exactly what the Reception teachers did recently.
As part of their Programme of Inquiry unit into houses, the children had an awesome time creating homes of various shapes and sizes. Some houses were big enough for a team of children, others barely large enough for one. Some houses were built as 2D creations and others were built to be as tall as the child and in some cases even higher.
Unbeknownst to the children, the learning extended way beyond that of creating a house. The most important lessons learned were all about creativity, collaboration, negotiation and inclusion.
Earlier this term we welcomed several new students and families to our St John’s Campus. Our new students included: Nicholas (Reception), Lilah (Reception), Mia (Reception), Farhana (Reception), Lucy (Year 2) and Sebastian (Year 2).
We trust that you settle into our St John’s Campus quickly, and we look forward to getting to know you over the coming months.
This term we welcome Mrs Wilk, Mrs Schirmer and Mr Robertson back from leave.
We have also recently been advised that Ms Kellie Symons, Assistant Director of OSHC, has accepted a teaching position in Port Lincoln. We congratulate Kellie on this appointment and wish her well in this new role. We also want to say a big thank you to Kellie for her dedicated and caring service to our community over the past four years.

On Friday 4 August, St John’s Campus held a Celebratory Day for the entire campus community to reflect on the huge success of the Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) Walk My Way event held late last term, and the wonderful support given by our school community to this event and to the ALWS as a whole throughout Term 2.
Over 20 staff members from the College walked the 26km from Hahndorf to Beaumont House, braving the conditions on a cold and rainy wintry day in July.
In the end, a total of $133,594 was raised through the event with 5000+ refugee children now being able to attend school as a result. Our school raised over $4,350.
Our Celebratory Day included a special Chapel service for the St John’s Campus with members of the walking team from both St John’s Campus and the Concordia Campus acknowledged by the community during the service. We were also blessed to have Robin Mann (Lutheran songwriter) as a special guest who performed the song that he wrote especially for the Walk My Way event. Robin also shared his journey of the 26km walk as a Multiple Sclerosis (MS) sufferer, and his story was both moving and inspirational.
Lunchtime was a hive of activity in the Hall, with students from all year levels having the opportunity to participate in a variety of different activities including the limbo, water bucket challenge and an obstacle course.
Special thanks goes to a group of Year 6 students for their assistance on the day – Olivia, Ella, Gerrit, Lilly, Tahlia, Sophie and Asmitha. Special thanks also goes to everyone in our community to their generosity towards ALWS last term through our Chapel offerings and sponsorship of our walkers.

This is always a wonderful morning and a great chance for our students to show their loved ones what life is like at Concordia College - St John's Campus.

The annual Quiz & Games Night is fast approaching and we are looking forward to a fantastic Hollywood-themed night from 7-11pm in the Concordia Campus Gym. If you haven't yet booked your tickets, time is running out, so please do so today to secure your seat.
Book onto a table of 8-10 and don't forget there are prizes for best dressed male/female and best dressed 'cast or crew'.
Year Level Baskets
To assist with creating some fantastic silent auction prizes, each year level has been allocated a theme and we are asking families to support the event by donating one or more items related to their child's year level theme. Collection boxes are located in each classroom.
We are also seeking donations of goods or services for the silent auction and the raffle. All donations are gratefully received and if you're able to assist in this way, we'd love to hear from you. Donors will be ackowledged on the night and in the newsletter, Concordia CONNECT.

On Monday 7 August, the Year 2s enjoyed visiting Wingfield Waste and Recycling Centre and Statewide Recycling Centre. The learning that occurred supported our 'Sharing the Planet' unit, with the Central Idea: People can make choices to support the sustainability of the Earth’s resources. The students participated in a tour of both sites, seeing what happens to our landfill rubbish, recycling and green waste. They also have a greater understanding of why it is important to recycle cans, bottles, jars and hard plastic. Below are reflections from the Year 2 students about what they learnt from this experience:
“It is important to collect cans and bottles. You get a 10c refund when you collect them.”
“To make glass you use sand. Glass can be 100% recycled.”
“Some things break down when you put it outside or in the dirt but not everything does. This is why we need to recycle.”
“Metal and glass take a very, very long time to break down. This is why they should not go into landfill.”
“In landfill they have five layers – three layers of stone, one layer of fabric and the landfill is also one layer. This is so things do not leak into the groundwater.”
“Tissues can go in the green bin because they once were from a tree. Like they said, if it grows it can go into the green bin.”
The students also had a visit from Vinnies, to talk about the benefits of donating items that they no longer want so other people can reuse them. This helps people to buy things a lot cheaper, but also is good for the environment, because it means less goes into landfill. Currently, there are two Vinnies bins outside of the Year 2 classrooms. We would encourage the St John’s Campus community to donate any unwanted items (clothes, toys, books etc.) to Vinnies using these bins. They will be available until towards the end of Term 2. The Years 2s thank you in advance for your support!
Term 3 is a busy term for the St. John’s Campus. We have many musical events coming up:
- Friday 18 August - Grandparents and Special Friends Day (ELC – Year 3): Junior String Ensemble, Reception – Year 2 Choir, Years 3/4 and 5/6 choirs, and Concert Band will be performing.
- Thursday 24 August (please note change of date): Concert Band performing in the ABODA Festival at Westminster.
- Thursday 31 August: Music Showcase in the Concordia Chapel at 7pm.
Rehearsals for the Music Showcase will be held during school time on 31 August. Groups performing at the showcase are:
- Concert Band
- Junior String Ensemble
- Recorder Ensemble
- String Ensemble
- Percussion Ensemble
- Years 3/4 and 5/6 Choirs
You may have seen some wooden planter boxes near the primary playground. These “trugs”, as they are called, have been filled with plants and flowers and will be cared for by the Year 2, 3 and 5 classes. These have been purchased with the funds raised at the Mother’s Day Market Stall in May. Some creative play equipment has also been purchased with these funds.
On Wednesday 30 August, the Father’s Day Market Stall will be run by the ELC, Year 1, 4 and 6 families. Please note this is a Wednesday just prior to Father’s Day (Friday 1 September is Show Day).Back to top
Student Led Conferences are held at the end of Term 3 for Reception to Year 5 students and their families. All parents are encouraged to come and spend time with each of their children for an hour, as the students share some of their learning. The students become the teachers! The online booking system will be open from Tuesday 22 August and the conferences will be held on the dates listed below:
