Last week the Resource Centre was abuzz with a range of Book Week activities.
Andrew Joyner, a local illustrator, visited the St John's Campus, working with each year level across two days. Students had lots of fun following Andrew’s instructions and learning to draw animals, just like him.
The Resource Centre was set up as ‘Book Bites Café’ and each class also enjoyed a relaxed session of book tasting, as well as expressing their thoughts about some popular genres and authors through 'Tabletop Twitter'.
At a designated time during the week, each class teacher 'escaped' to another classroom to read a story to a different class. We also had Rebecca from Pegi Williams Bookshop come and speak to the Upper Primary students about new books. Students were given time to browse these books and vote for the ones that wanted to see in our Resource Centre.
The week ended with a Scholastic Book Fair, where many books were purchased, much to the delight of the students!
Resource Manager for Learning and Teaching - St John's Campus
It was wonderful on Friday 18 August to welcome nearly 400 visitors to our Campus.
There was much excitement and this was not only the from students, but all the visitors as well.
The morning commenced with a Chapel service that was led by Mrs Celina Read’s Year 1 class. The theme for the service was being God’s servants. The Year 1s were very confident as they led worship and even showed some amazing dance moves throughout the songs!
This year we made changes to the format of the morning and our guests enjoyed being able to visit a variety of areas of the school with the children that they had come to see. Our visitors were taken on a trail around the Campus that included classrooms, Art, Music and braving the cold weather outside. There were painting, book reading, sports activities and music making activities included in the morning. These were followed by morning tea in our courtyard as many visitors caught up with each other. The morning concluded with a showcase of musical talent, with choirs, the Concert Band and percussion groups sharing their musical expertise.
It was wonderful to have so many guests come to visit us on what was a cold and wintry day. It certainly meant so much to our community to be able to spend time with them all.
A reminder that Friday 1 September is a student free day. OSHC will be open and we will be having a show-themed day with show bags, a jumping castle, farm animals, games and much more. Planned redevelopment projects for the ELC Garden (pictured below), our Highgate Street frontage and the Concordia Campus Balmoral Street corner are scheduled to commence on Monday 18 September.
These three projects will significantly enhance existing areas and, in the case of the ELC garden redevelopment, create a welcoming, engaging and beautiful new outdoor learning area for our ELC students.
This is a 10-week project and is due to finish on Friday 24 November 2017.
Adelaide Innovative Landscaping will be working alongside our College architects, Russell & Yelland, to complete the project.
During this period, the ELC entrance, garden and veranda will not be accessible and the entrance to the ELC will be via the Reception classroom corridor. ELC lockers will be relocated into the passageway.
At times, there may be some impact on parking and traffic flow on Highgate and Winchester Streets, and we will attempt to advise you of these when possible.
Some of the features of this development include:
- Upgrade to ELC Garden and Veranda including new entry, viewing fence, platform, and fencing.
- New signage at St John's Campus Office entry (consistent with the Concordia Campus)
- New signage on Highgate/Winchester Street corner
- Replacement of Highgate Street fencing and rendering of brick walls
- New signage on the Balmoral Street Corner (at the Concordia Campus)
We are very excited about these projects and look forward to the improvements in these areas.

A Wonderful Community Evening
A huge thank you to our amazing Links team for coordinating another amazing Quiz and Games Night on Saturday. A great time was had by all. Thank you also to our community for supporting the event through sponsorship, helping on the night and attendance. Click here for a write-up of the event.
We congratulate Mrs Forrest and her husband George who recently announced that they are expecting their first child in March next year. We also wish them God’s rich blessing as they move towards this exciting new chapter in their lives as a family.
We are currently in the process of advertising a number of staffing positions for next year to fill known vacancies. We hope to have these staffing processes completed toward the end of this term. These positions will be advertised on the College website and also at www.teachers.on.net

Principal - St John's Campus
On an excursion to the Migration Museum, the Year 1s travelled back in time, experiencing life as a child in the 19th Century.
The children dressed in smocks, marched into the school room and practised their handwriting on slate boards until it was perfect! At the bell they marched outside and played games of quoits, knuckle bones and hoops.
After this ‘hands on session’ the children heard about the life of the indigenous people, the early settlers and those who came to Australia on the convict ships during this time.
The visit to the Migration Museum provided the Year 1s with a 'hook' to provoke their thinking around the Program of Inquiry topic: Where we are in place and time.
The Central Idea for this unit is: "Learning about previous generations helps us understand the connection between past and present."
They are now full of ‘wanderings and wonderings’ about their history! The children are ready to explore the past and the changes which have occurred over time, and will seek to make connections with the world today and into the future.

Year 1 Teachers
We are looking forward to the upcoming Year 6 Exhibition which will showcase and celebrate the learning of our Year 6 students throughout the IB Primary Years Programme. The exhibition will be open for a range of times on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 September, with the main session for parents running from 4.30pm - 6.30pm on Thursday 14 September.

At the St John’s Campus Assembly this week, the School Leaders created a visual timeline to represent the growth of our partnership with schools on the Siassi Islands of Papua New Guinea. Since the partnership’s inception in 2011, St John’s Campus staff have made three visits to the islands and our community has hosted three visits from Siassi teachers.
The practical focus of our partnership is to provide support and encouragement to teachers through professional development, particularly in the areas of phonics and teaching English as a second language. The heart of the partnership lies in the development of long term relationships between our communities, founded on the sharing of Christian faith.
During the first week of the upcoming holidays, another team of St John’s Campus staff will travel to Lae on mainland PNG to meet with a delegation of 15 Siassi teachers and church leaders to discuss future directions of our partnership. Preparations are well underway to ensure that these meetings continue to strengthen the partnership and renew our combined vision for the future.

The Student Representative Council (SRC) has been talking about raising more money for Siassi through our Chapel offerings. At the end of this term we have five staff, Mr Paech, Frau Graham, Mrs McClure, Mrs Marker and Mrs Wells, travelling to Papua New Guinea as part of our partnership. If you would like to support this cause then please donate money through your offerings collected on a Friday at Chapel.
This term we are also supporting Operation Christmas Child. It is an initiative of an organisation called Samaritan's Purse that sends shoe boxes of gifts to children in other countries in need. If you would like to support this initiative then you may use a shoe box from home. Alternatively, boxes can be purchased for 50 cents from the School Office. We encourage you to pack a shoe box for someone and/or help us to raise more money for our Chapel offerings.
