Student Led Conferences for Reception to Year 5 students will be held in Weeks 9 and 10 of Term 3. These conferences not only give students the opportunity to share their learning, they also assist in developing and increasing the students’ self-confidence and ability to be reflective learners.
Essential skills that are also developed through the planning and running of the SLC:
- Organisation skills
- Communication skills
- Management of time and resources
- Social skills
It is a chance for students to become the teachers as they revel in the captive audience of you – their parents. You will be involved in various activities that will showcase to you the different learning opportunities your child has, seeing your child active in their learning environment.
They may talk about a piece of work and explain the process involved, teach you a concept through playing a game or task, or share their growth in an area or a goal that they are working towards achieving. Please be aware that this is an opportunity for you to spend time with your child celebrating their learning in a one-on-one situation and we ask that siblings not attend for this reason. Some guiding questions will be sent home prior to allow you the chance to familiarise yourself with the areas of learning that will be shared.
Student Led Conferences will be held on the following dates:
R - 2: Week 9 - Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 September
Year 3 -5: Week 10 - Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 September
These hour long sessions will commence at 3.30pm and conclude at 6.30pm.
Time will be spent in both classroom and with single subject teachers.
You and your child will be asked to take part in the specialist areas at a specific time to avoid congestion of learning areas.

The St John’s Campus of Concordia College enjoys a partnership with a group of schools on the Siassi Islands of Papua New Guinea. Over the past eight years, the partnership has grown and strengthened, with a particular focus upon supporting teachers in the development of English language skills for themselves and their students. Many challenges exist and sometimes threaten the continuation of the partnership, but we are convinced that we have been called as a school community to be in relationship with the people of Siassi, to offer love, support and professional development.
In 2018 we rewrote our Vision Statement for our partnership which states that:
The partnership between Siassi Schools and Concordia College, St John’s Campus, which operates under the umbrella partnership between the Evangelical Lutheran Church - Papua New Guinea and the Lutheran Church Australia, is founded on the sharing of Christian faith and will encourage and support both parties in:
- developing the spiritual growth of staff and students;
- sharing God’s gifts;
- the professional growth of staff;
- achieving high standards of teaching, learning and leadership;
- promoting intercultural understanding and respect; and
- continuing the development of long-term relationships between our communities.
In 2019 we are planning for another visit to Siassi to further progress our vision for the partnership. At a recent partnership team meeting the decision was made to direct some of our Siassi partnership funds to the redevelopment of accomodation facilities on the main Siassi Island that will support the partnership. These facilities will be used by our staff who travel to the islands as well as by local Siassi people.
We are looking forward to our trip next year and ask that our community pray for our planning processes over the coming months.
At the end of this week Mrs Julie Kummerow will conclude a six-week teaching block in the Year 3R classroom, while Mrs Ruggiero has been on leave. We sincerely thank Julie for her care of and commitment to our students over the past six weeks. Mrs Ruggiero will return to teaching her class next week.
I would also like to extend our congratulations to Mrs Alicia Puiatti (2DP) and her husband Jason who have announced that they are expecting the arrival of their second child early next year. Alicia will be on Maternity Leave for 2019, planning to return to teaching in 2020.
We wish Alicia and Jason God’s blessing over the coming months as they prepare for this new addition to their family.
I also need to announce that Mr Gary Robertson (Learning Support) has announced that he will be retiring from teaching at the end of this year. We will officially thank and farewell Gary at the end of this year.
Over the coming months we will make staffing appointments to replace these positions in readiness for next year.
A Wonderful Evening for our Community
On Saturday night over 240 parents and friends of the St John’s Campus entered into the spirit of our Quiz & Disco 'Through the Decades' Fundraiser Night.
It was wonderful to see so many of our parents and friends join in the spirit of the evening and dress up for the occasion. Costumes were amazing with many disco and rock and roll themes along with a host of other creative and imaginative efforts on display.
All in all it was a fabulous night hosted by our resident MCs Nick Carr and Andy Harris (aka Ron Burgundy and Champ from Anchorman). Our wonderful Quiz Master Alan Redford-Insall also challenged us with a range of entertaining questions throughout the night.
On behalf of our community I would like to extend a huge thank you to all who contributed to the success of our evening. Our St John’s P&F team capably lead by Tanya Harris and Sally Carr, along with Angela Warrick our Community Engagement and Events Officer, did a wonderful job with tremendous support from the whole St John’s P&F team.
Thanks also to the many parents and friends who donated items, provided sponsorship and supported with preparation and pack-up of the event.
With 2019 looming not too far in the future we are always seeking additional members for our P&F so that we can ensure the ongoing service that this important team provide to our community. Book Week at St John’s Campus was a busy but fun week, with this year’s theme being ‘Find your treasure’. Two SA authors visited - Marianne Musgrove spent time with Year 3 to 6 students and Katrina Germein spent time with ELC to Year 2 students. Both authors talked about how they became an author, their life as an author and read some of their books.
Students found out who were the winners in the 'Create and decorate a treasure box' competition and throughout the week buddy classes excitedly participated in a QR code book hunt around the school, finding answers to 11 questions.
The annual Scholastic Book Fair was held during the middle of the week and on Friday most students and staff came dressed up as a book character. A wonderful way to wrap up a fabulous week!
Resource Centre Manager
As part of their inquiry into what the past was like, last week the Year 1 students visited the Migration Museum. Students really enjoyed dressing up and playing games as they explored what life was like for a child in the 19th century. Students also had the opportunity to visit the SA Museum and they enjoyed exploring the exhibits and seeing what life was like in the past in Egypt, Australia and Papua New Guinea. This excursion certainly gave the students a greater insight into aspects of Australia’s history.

Year 1 Teachers
The Year 1s took a trip back in time to the 1800s and explored life in the Unley area. The Unley Museum was once the local fire station. The fire fighters would keep watch in the tower and were even able to keep an eye on the football at the Unley oval. The students learnt all about the changes to the area from the Kaurna people to the early settlers who first lived in tents before building huts and later stone houses. The children walked the block viewing the old houses and also the churches and town hall. From here the students reflected on their new found knowledge which determines new questions and wonderings that we will now follow up.

Year 1 Teachers
As part of our Unit of Inquiry, our sensational Reception scientists are inquiring into how living things need certain conditions to survive. These mini scientists enjoyed a day at Urrbrae Wetlands exploring and observing what inhabits this area.
They caught many aqua macro invertebrates, looked at them under microscopes, and classified and sorted them. They spent time wandering along the bush track observing many birds and classifying them into bush and water categories. Reception scientists left the wetlands feeling very positive about taking action towards a sustainable future for our wetlands.
On Friday, 17 August, the Year 4, 5 and 6 classes welcomed their grandparents and special friends to St John’s Campus. Chapel was presented by Year 5 and was followed by a performance from the Vocal Ensemble. Students guided their guests around the campus following a Learning Trail which included games grandparents may have played when they were at school, classroom activities, viewing P.O.I. exhibits and creating art and music using apps on iPads. A delicious morning tea was followed by a concert performed by the Percussion Ensemble, Concert Band and both the Year 3/4 and 5/6 Choirs. Everyone enjoyed a delightful day sharing this special time together.
We were privileged to welcome Julie Krause from Australian Lutheran World Service to St John’s Campus on Tuesday, 21 August. Julie worked with the Year 3 and 4 classes, investigating ‘servanthood’ and how we can help people around the world “Survive and Thrive!” We enjoyed learning through presentations, a range of simulation games and collaborative problem solving challenges.Back to top
On Thursday, 23 August, the St John’s Campus Concert Band attended the Aboda Festival at Westminster school led by their conductor, Mr Mat Noble. They performed three pieces. Some of the students have only been learning an instrument for two and a half terms and competed against other primary and high school bands. The students played wonderfully as an ensemble and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, placing silver on the day. Well done St John’s Campus Concert Band!
