It’s always interesting to witness the mixed feelings of the Year 12s on their last day; excitement, anticipation, and some sadness at the prospect of seeing each other in the same place for the last time. There is heightened emotion as everything the students have been working towards finally comes to a head. It’s not just a time to reflect on one year’s worth of work and effort, it’s also a culmination of 13 years of schooling and friendships. At Concordia, we treat this as a celebration, not as a farewell – it is like they are heading to the next stage in life. It is not just the efforts of the students we celebrate, but also the efforts and support of their teachers, and of course their parents.
As their Year 12 Pastoral Leader, I was more than proud of our students during their last few days of school. They enjoyed basketball, netball, volleyball, and touch football matches against the staff at lunchtime, organised by Mr Kleidon. At times they showed incredible skill not to brutally outscore the staff. They dressed magnificently on their last Non-uniform Day, with many creative costumes on display. On their final day they enjoyed an early breakfast before the Final Assembly. In our usual tradition, subject awards were presented and the formal ‘thankyou’ and ‘handing over’ speeches formed part of the Final Assembly which also included an inspiring and moving devotion by Sam K 12RSO. The fun and excitement always rests in the creative ability of our students’ performances and their witty video productions.
Afterwards, many students headed off for some relaxation and study. We look forward to seeing all of the Year 12s with their teachers at their Valedictory Dinner on Thursday 23 November, after the completion of their exams.
Personally, I have had the opportunity to teach and get to know many of these students over the last two years, and there was some sadness in saying goodbye.
To the Year 12s:
May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
Especially over the weeks of their exams, and in their lives ahead, may God lead them safely, both through times of trouble and joy.
I would like to thank the Year 12 Home Class teachers; Mr Bright, Ms Budd, Mr Fletcher, Mrs Nelson and Ms Rosie for all the pastoral care they have given to the students in their Home Classes throughout this year.

As part of their Year 10 Geography studies, students engage in a unit on Coastal Studies, which culminates in a field-study of the Noarlunga Coastline. In preparation for this, 10 PLO created small presentations and activities that explored global coastal management issues, entitled ‘Risk and Rescue”. The Year 10s were asked to design an activity or simulation to teach our Year 5 students about their topic, ensuring that they engaged their audience. Topics included coastal pollution, erosion, functions of the environment, global warming and coral bleaching. Our senior students did exceptionally well in engaging their audience of almost sixty students! Another wonderful example of the collaborative learning opportunities that occur when our campuses meet!
Any students heading into Year 11 or 12 in 2018 can take part in this school-based VET course. It provides an opportunity for students to learn more and grow in the Christian faith, gaining a Certificate III in Christian Ministry and Theology for their efforts. As well as its spiritual benefits, it is also academically beneficial to both SACE (Stage 2 subject) and IB students (CAS hours). Please see the Veta website for more details. Alternatively, please email or speak to Jason Kupke to find out more.
