Old Concordian Althea Mallee (2008) always had a passion for the arts, but it was in 2017 that she really decided to pursue her interest in Visual Art and follow her calling by studying a Bachelor of Visual Arts at Adelaide College of the Arts and Flinders University. Initially, Althea thought that this new pathway may lead her into teaching, but requests to paint murals from several clients caused her to become captivated by the challenges of a large scale project and the way these pieces can impact a space and the wider community.
"I was drawn to the idea of being of service through art in a way that is accessible and uplifting for many people."
Althea says she is still coming to terms with having her art displayed on walls around Adelaide and beyond, but feels incredibly honoured and grateful that others appreciate her work and the many hours it takes to develop skill in this particular craft. She takes joy from knowing she can help transform dull or uninviting spaces into ones that feel inspiring, welcoming and alive.
Althea's other passions include travelling and learning about different cultures. These, in turn, help fuel her creativity. She is also a keen surfer, something that helps her stay fit, grounded and connected to nature. Her love for nature also sees her volunteering at animal sanctuaries in her spare time.
Reflecting on her time at school, Althea says Concordia is a school of which she felt proud to be a part.
"From the moment I stepped into the classroom, I felt it was a place that valued curiosity and intellect. The teachers and students created a supportive and encouraging environment that left a lasting impression on me."
Thinking back to the best or funniest memories of her time at the College, she said it was the friendships and connections made that stand out most, having built a strong network of friends, many of whom she is still in contact with today.
When asked what advice she would give to current students considering art as a career, Althea said,
"Don’t let fear or doubt hold you back. Every day in a creative career is different, and not everything will go to plan but if you truly believe in your art and its place in the world, keep going. Creativity is deeply needed, and your unique voice matters."
