This term, Stage 1 Geography students have been studying hazard and disaster management, with a targeted focus on bushfire preparedness. After formative learnings and a guest lecture from Mr Oppelaar, who recently had to implement his own bushfire action plan, students headed to Kuitpo Forest to engage in their own field study investigation.
Guided by their Inquiry question "How prepared is Kuitpo forest to withstand a bushfire event?", students undertook a range of activities including bipolar surveys, vegetation density and potential canopy and understory fuel. For the students, it was their first time undertaking an investigation of this nature, which requires problem-solving, investigative skills and critical thinking. Another extraordinary example of our steward-ents (Geography joke) applying their classroom studies to the wider world.
