The Year 4 writers at St John’s Campus have been developing their skills in crafting clear, well-organised opinion texts. Through explicit mini lessons, students have learnt how to generate and organise ideas, develop a strong thesis statement, structure their writing using reasons and supporting evidence, and elaborate on their thinking with facts, examples and explanations. These strategies provide students with a transferable framework for writing across a range of curriculum areas, helping them communicate their ideas with increasing clarity and purpose.
Throughout the unit, students paused at key checkpoints to reflect on their writing progress and set new goals, supporting them to become more independent and thoughtful writers. Students have shown strong growth, and improved in their ability to think critically, communicate clearly and write with purpose.
The Year 4s will finish the unit publishing their writing to share their opinions with an authentic audience, celebrating their hard work and progress as developing writers.
