Our Year 6 students recently returned from an engaging and memorable trip to Canberra. Over four action-packed days, they explored how government decision-making shapes a fair society, bringing classroom learning to life.
Students from St Peters and St John’s campuses travelled together, building friendships and strengthening connections. Highlights included visits to Parliament House, Government House, and the Royal Australian Mint, along with the National Electoral Education Centre, the Australian War Memorial, Questacon and the Australian Institute of Sport. These experiences supported a rich understanding of Australia’s democracy, history, science and sporting excellence.
Throughout the trip, students demonstrated maturity, resilience and teamwork. They navigated travel confidently, supported one another and represented the school with pride, growing as capable and independent learners.
"One of my strongest memories was overcoming fear on the Questacon free-fall slide. Standing so high was nerve-wracking, and at first I wasn’t sure if I could do it. But I pushed myself to try, and once I did, it felt exciting and fun. I was proud of myself for being brave and trying something new." – Eva
"One of my favourite parts of visiting Canberra has to be Questacon! Not just because of the cool experiments, but because I had been waiting for this experience for years. I loved the earthquake room as I could enjoy it with my friends without feeling afraid. It was my #1 highlight." – Lizzy
"My highlight was visiting the Royal Australian Mint! We saw how coins are made and even created our own. There were so many interesting areas, including a wall made from coins. It was my favourite place." – Poppy
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist schools and families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributes $90 per student towards those costs under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
