Careers and Pathways Update

"The future depends on what you do today." – Mahatma Gandi

Just like that, Term 3 is almost over! The last few weeks have seen many meetings with Year 12s about SATAC and course preferences and we’ve had a few students across Year 10 and 11 preparing for and heading out on work experience.

I provided our Senior School students with links to dozens of Christmas casual jobs, and I’ve heard that many students have already had interviews and gained employment. Great work!

What do you ask at a Job Interview?

Speaking of employment, have you prepared for your interview? While you may have practised answers to all the questions you might be asked, have you thought about what you want to ask?

Interviewers often end by asking if you have any questions, so having a couple ready shows you’re interested and prepared. Asking the right questions can also help you work out if the job’s a good fit.

Good questions to ask:

  • What can I do to succeed in this role?
  • What are some of the challenging aspects of the role?
  • What do people enjoy most about working here?

Avoid asking questions about:

  • Pay or promotions.
  • If you can choose your own hours or days off.
  • Information you could’ve found online.

Before you leave an interview, ask when you're likely to hear back. If that date passes without word, it's fine to follow up, but hold off until then, as chasing too early can come across as impatient.

SATAC Reminders

  • Pay $60 for your application if you pay before 30 September—the price jumps to $210 after this.
  • Use a personal email address when creating your account
  • Have your SACE number and USI (Unique Student Identifier) handy. If you are unsure if you have a USI, go to www.usi.gov.au
  • Have access to digital documents when creating your application e.g. evidence of a completed VET qualification, as you will need to enter these details into your application.
