Middle and Senior School Debating

Concordia College had a terrific debating season in 2026, with nine teams and approximately 40 Concordia students competing in the Debating SA Competition. Our debating program has continued to grow each year, a testament to the hard work, commitment and perseverance of our students.

Our teams achieved excellent results in the minor rounds:

  • Senior (Year 11): Quarter-Finalists – 4th out of 27 teams
  • Year 10 Blue: Semi-Finalists – 4th out of 24 teams
  • Year 10 Yellow: Quarter-Finalists – 5th out of 24 teams
  • Year 9 Blue: 23rd out of 47 teams
  • Year 9 Yellow: 9th out of 47 teams
  • Year 8 Blue: 28th out of 44 teams
  • Year 8 Yellow: 14th out of 44 teams
  • Year 7 Blue: 36th out of 51 teams
  • Year 7 Yellow: 12th out of 51 teams

The Senior, Year 10 Blue and Year 10 Yellow Debating Teams qualified for the quarter-finals, which were held on Wednesday, 9 September 2026.

The Senior team debated on the affirmative side of the topic, “That Schoolies is a bad idea.” Unfortunately, the team lost in a split decision; however, Rebecca Lanzilli was awarded Best Speaker of the debate.

By luck of the draw, Year 10 Blue and Year 10 Yellow faced each other in the quarter-finals, meaning that only one team could progress to the semi-finals. Year 10 Blue presented a stronger case on the topic, “That students who miss school for a political demonstration should be disciplined.” Lilah Harris was awarded Best Speaker of the debate.

We look forward to sharing the Year 10 Blue team's results from the semifinal soon.

We would like to thank our dedicated debating coaches (Angus Moffatt, Tahlia Rosenberg, Rebecca Lanzilli and Juliana Lanzilli) for their guidance and support throughout the season.

We are incredibly proud of the achievements of all our debating students this season and look forward to seeing the program continue to grow in 2027.
