Year 7 Traditional Bavarian Folk Dancing
On Monday of Week 8, all Year 7 language students were introduced to the 'Schuhplattler' by guest presenter Rowan Classen. The ‘Schuhplattler’ is a traditional folk dance originating in Upper Bavaria, Tyrol and Salzburg, where dancers stomp, clap and slap the soles of their shoes, thighs and knees. Within a very short time the students were energetically performing the routine, demonstrating great coordination, and having lots of fun as they increased their cultural understanding of the German speaking communities. Rowan also emphasised the importance of learning other languages, which is not only excellent for brain development, but enhances our ability to connect with people from other countries in a deeper and more meaningful way.

Year 8 German "Schulausflug"
On Tuesday of Week 9, 22 Year 8 German students attended a "Schulausflug" (school excursion) to Westminster College. Together with students from Westminster School, Immanuel College and Aldinga Payinthi College, the students enjoyed a morning of German music, quizzes, games and even a dance! They also learnt about the benefits of learning foreign languages and had the opportunity to interview a language assistant from Leipzig, Germany. A highlight was definitely morning tea, which consisted of delicious jam Berliners and giant Brezel (pretzels). It was especially fitting for Concordia students to take part in this excursion, as it was organised by Old Concordian Jack Manning (2021), who is now a German teacher at Westminster.
