Students Contribute to National Discussion on SBS Insight

11 Mar 2026

On the back of some strong performances in 2025, one of our Debating teams—including Lilah (Year 10), who was named the best debater in the Year 9 competition last year—was honoured to be invited to appear as guests on the SBS Insight television program, discussing ‘The Death of Debate’.

Flying to Sydney’s SBS studio, the four girls joined a range of other experts to discuss the topic, exploring our capacity as a national population to engage in productive, safe and respectful debate, as well as the importance of healthy debate in a democracy. They spoke about the significant role debating can play in the development of critical thinking skills, empathy and the ability to grasp the nuance of complex topics. They also highlighted the increasing polarisation present in our society and how debate can break down these divisions by helping people work towards reasoned, empathetic decisions.

The episode aired on Tuesday 10 March and we are very proud of the way in which Ilsa, Lilah, Amelia and Nevada represented Concordia College on the national stage.
